Female sexuality issues

Female sexuality issues

Sexual problems in women are common. Many women go through these problems at some stage in their life. According to a journal, sexual problems affect one-third of young and middle-aged women, and around half of older women.

What is Sexual Dysfunction?

Constant, recurring problems with sexual response, desire, orgasm or pain that strain your relationship with your partner are called sexual dysfunction.

What are the symptoms of Sexual Dysfunction?

  • Lack of sexual interest
  • The difficulty with arousal or inability to become aroused
  • Difficulty in achieving orgasm after enough sexual arousal
  • Pain associated with sexual stimulation or vaginal contact

What are the causes of Sexual Dysfunction?

Changes in the hormones are the main reason for sexual problems which generally occur after having a baby or during menopause. Diseases like cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease can also cause sexual dysfunction.

Anxiety and depression are also the causes of sexual dysfunction.

There are some risk factors which can increase the risk of sexual dysfunction:

  • Depression or anxiety
  • Heart and blood vessel disease
  • Spinal cord injury or multiple sclerosis
  • Gynaecological conditions
  • Certain medicines such as antidepressants or high blood pressure medications
  • Emotional or psychological stress
  • Sexual abuse

How is Sexual Dysfunction Diagnosed?

The doctor will discuss your sexual and medical history to find an effective way to treat them. The doctor will recommend the pelvic exam to check for physical changes such as thinning of genital tissues, pain or decreased skin elasticity.

The doctor may recommend blood tests to check for underlying health conditions that might contribute to sexual dysfunction.

How is sexual dysfunction treated?

The treatment of sexual dysfunction varies according to the symptoms. Usually, women with sexual concerns benefit from a combined treatment approach that addresses medical as well as relationship and emotional issues.

Non-medical treatment for Female Sexual Dysfunction

  • Talk openly with your partner about your likes and dislikes. It will make a huge difference in your sexual dysfunction.
  • Avoid too much alcohol and exercise regularly. Physical activity increases your stamina and elevates your mood.
  • Talk with a counselor who specializes in sexual and relationship problems.
  • If you have vaginal dryness, then use vaginal lubricant.

Medical treatment for female sexual dysfunction

  • Oestrogen therapy comes in the form of a vaginal ring, cream or tablet. It improves vaginal tone and elasticity, increases vaginal blood flow and enhances lubrication.
  • There are some medicines which help in reducing pain during sex for women with vulvovaginal atrophy.
  • Androgen therapy includes testosterone which plays a role in healthy sexual function in women as well as men.
