Pro-fertility Counselling

Infertility is the inability to conceive even after having carefully timed and unprotected sex for over a year. There are various causes which can lead to infertility like age, genetics, lifestyle, etc. Either male infertility or female infertility or both can lead to infertility in the couple. Moreover, due to various factors like sedentary lifestyle, consumption of unhealthy diet, etc., the number of infertility cases is constantly increasing.

Role of Counselling:

Infertility can take a toll on the life of the couple. It can cause distress and depression, and even create tension in the relationship. Counselling can help the couple overcome the stress caused due to infertility. Hence an effective treatment of infertility should involve counselling to help the couple overcome various issues caused due to infertility.

Should you opt for it?

Dealing with infertility is a difficult task, and hence, couples struggling with infertility should seek the help of a professional. You must opt for counselling when:

  • If infertility overwhelms you and takes over your life. Each individual is different and hence many people cope up with infertility without any professional help. However, if you find that infertility is causing you sadness or depression, anxiety, or any other mental health issue, it is strongly advised to seek the help of a counsellor.
  • If infertility is straining your relationship with your spouse, family, friends, etc., or if it just makes you uneasy in some social situations, talking to a counsellor can be quite beneficial. You may also opt for joint counselling with your spouse as a counsellor can understand what you might be going through and provide support.
  • If the infertility is difficult to treat and you are thinking of alternate options like surrogacy, adoption, etc., it is highly recommended to talk to a counsellor before doing so. Opting for sperm donation, egg donation, surrogacy, etc., is a very important decision to make. Many couples underestimate the emotional impact of such a decision and regret later. Hence, it is important to take professional help and advice before taking such an impactful and important step.
  • On the other hand, if you are thinking of living a child-free life, talking to a counsellor can be quite helpful too. Accepting and realizing the fact that you are going to lead a life without a child can be quite overwhelming for many couples. A counsellor can help you process the emotions and overcome it in a strong manner.
  • You may also seek the help of a counsellor if you are feeling indecisive or clueless in general. Making decision related to infertility, treatment, adoption, etc. can be quite difficult and a counsellor may assist you in making a more informed decision.
