Intrauterine Contraceptive Devices

Intrauterine Contraceptive Devices or IUCDs are devices that are inserted into the uterus to prevent contraception. These devices come in various shapes, size and are of many types. An IUCD changes the uterine lining which prevents the fertilised egg from attaching itself onto the uterine walls, thus preventing implantation. Getting an IUCD fitted is a quick, non-surgical procedure and it is a safe method of contraception.

What are the advantages of an IUCD or IUD?

  • It is a safe and effective non-surgical method of contraception.
  • It does not affect your fertility levels and is a readily reversible procedure.
  • A single insertion offers prolonged contraceptive protection for many years.
  • It does not hamper sexual activities and may probably help improve sexual relations as there is no fear of an unwanted pregnancy. Also, at no point during intercourse should you or your partner feel the IUCD or its threads.

Copper-T

The copper-T is a type of IUDC that is inserted into the uterus as a form of long term birth control. This device has a T shaped plastic frame which has copper wire coiled around its stem and 2 copper sleeves along its arms. These copper sleeves release copper continuously into the uterus lining, bathing it in copper, to which the uterus has an inflammatory response that makes the environment toxic for sperm. This reaction helps in preventing fertilization as the sperm cannot survive.

Advantages of using a copper IUD

  • It is 99% effective and can last for a decade.
  • They do not contain any synthetic hormones.
  • Does not affect your fertility or ovulation cycle.
  • It has no effect on your skin, mood or sex drive.
  • One of the cheapest forms of contraception that has the longest life, 12 years.

Mirena

Merina is another type of IUD that uses hormones as a form of birth control to prevent pregnancy. This device also has a T-shaped frame made of plastic that is inserted into the uterus which releases a type of progestin hormone. The Mirena once inserted begins to thicken the mucus lining in the cervix, which stops the sperms from reaching the egg for fertilisation. This device also partially represses ovulation and thins the uterus lining as well.

What are the benefits?

  • It is safe and effective form of long-term contraception and can last up to 5 years.
  • It is not permanent, so it can be removed at any time.
  • Does not affect your fertility levels.
  • No side effects like in the case of birth control pills.
