All you need to know about Hysteroscopic Polypectomy

The monthly menstruation cycle can be a struggle for most women bringing along with it pain, cramps, bloating, and mood swings. These issues can mostly be tackled with medication and healthy lifestyle but in severe cases, consulting a doctor regarding your reproductive health is a good idea. Your health care specialist in such cases recommends you a hysteroscopy. This procedure can help to identify the issue related to your pain by giving her/him an up-close look at your cervix and uterus.

What is Hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy is a procedure your doctor performs to learn more about your reproductive health. Here your doctor inserts a hysteroscope (a thin tube with a light on the end) into your vagina to examine your cervix and your uterus. Hence hysteroscopy is very helpful in identifying anything abnormal down there by taking a sample for later testing.

What is a Polypectomy?

Polypectomy is the procedure of removing the polyp. A polyp is an extra growth that originates in the tissue and then extends into the hollow space. It may cause unwanted symptoms, and sometimes can be cancerous therefore it needs to be examined as soon as possible.

Polypectomy can be performed on any part of the body that develops polyps. It can even be nose or stomach, but the most common ones are uterine polypectomy and colon polypectomy.

What are the symptoms of polyps?

Symptoms of colon polyps are:

  • Bleeding from the rectum
  • Iron deficiency anaemia
  • Abdominal pain and cramps due to the blockage of the bowel movement by the polyps
  • Black stool due to heavy bleeding
  • Frequent constipation or diarrhoea

Symptoms of uterine polyps are:

  • Infertility or difficulty in conceiving
  • Heavy menstrual periods
  • Irregular menstrual cycle
  • Bleeding between menstrual periods
  • Vaginal bleeding after menopause

What is Hysteroscopic Polypectomy?

Hysteroscopic Polypectomy is a surgical procedure performed to remove the uterine polyps while preserving the uterus. Uterine polyps are the extra growth that originates in the inner wall or lining of the uterus and then extends into the hollow space. It can be cancerous or non-cancerous overgrowth. Therefore it needs to be examined as soon as possible.

What is the procedure?

The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia where an elongated, thin instrument is inserted through the vagina into the uterus to remove or shave the polyps off. Along with this, a hysteroscope (a thin tube with a light on the end) is also inserted to the womb through the cervix to examine the cervix and the uterus for identifying anything abnormal down there.
