Types of Hysterectomy Procedures

Types of Hysterectomy Procedures and its Complications

The types of Hysterectomy Procedures are:

Total Abdominal Hysterectomy: In this procedure, the incision is made five inches long in the abdomen to remove the uterus.

Open Surgery Hysterectomy: It is the most common approach to hysterectomy surgery. An abdominal hysterectomy is an open surgery. In this, the surgeon makes a 5 to 7-inch incision across the belly.

MIP Hysterectomy: Several approaches can be used for a MIP Hysterectomy:

  • Vaginal Hysterectomy: In this procedure, the uterus is removed through the incision, and a cut is made in the top of the vagina.
  • Laparoscopic Hysterectomy: This surgery is done using a laparoscope. A laparoscope is a tube with a lighted camera, and surgical tools inserted through several small cuts made in the belly. The surgeon operates a video screen from outside the body.
  • Laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy: It is done by using laparoscopic surgical tools.
  • Robot-assisted laparoscopic hysterectomy: In this, the surgeon controls a robot system of surgical tools from outside the body.

What are the Risks and Complications of Hysterectomy?

Most women who undergo hysterectomy have no common problems from the surgery. However, it is a major surgery and is not without risks. Complications of hysterectomy include:

  • Risk of heavy bleeding after surgery.
  • General anaesthesia given during the surgery can sometimes cause an allergic reaction and nerve damage in sporadic cases.
  • Damage to abdominal organs such as the bowel or bladder which can result to infection, incontinence, and a frequent need to urinate.
  • Risk of wound infection or urinary tract infection.
  • It can result in a blood clot that occurs in a vein and obstructs the blood circulation and the flow of oxygen in the body. This condition is called as thrombosis.
  • After surgery even if one or both of your ovaries are left intact, there are chances they could fail within five of surgery.

If you have had your ovaries removed, then it can result in early menopause, and you can have symptoms just after the operation such as hot flushes, sweating, vaginal dryness, and disturbed sleep.
