Getting pregnant is a very complicated process. Every month in the middle of the menstrual cycle ovulation occurs and during the ovulation period, the fallopian tubes carry an egg from an ovary to the uterus. If an egg is fertilized by sperm, it moves through the tube to the uterus for implantation. However, if the fallopian tube is blocked, the passage for sperm to get to the eggs, as well as the passage back to the uterus for the fertilized egg is blocked.
There are many treatments which can open up these blocked fallopian tubes. Some are surgical, and some are not.
Fallopian Tube Recanalization (FTR)
This procedure doesn’t require surgery and it reopens the fallopian tubes if they are blocked by using a speculum which is a tool used to keep the vagina open. Then through the cervix, a small plastic tube is inserted into the uterus, and a dye is injected through the tube and X-ray is taken to see the blockage. Then a small catheter is inserted to clear the blockage.
Before the procedure general anaesthesia is given, and then a small cut is made in the abdomen to remove blocked parts of the fallopian tubes. Then tubes are reconnected by stitches.
In this surgery, the doctor will open the fallopian tube and remove the blockage but leave the tube in place and let the incision open, so it heals on its own.
In this surgery, the fallopian tubes are removed either by using a pre-tied surgical loop which will remove the fallopian tube by tightening the knot or by destroying the blood vessels in the fallopian tube.
This procedure is suggested when the blockage in the fallopian tube is close to the ovary. This procedure opens the blocked tube and saves tissue known as the fimbriae so that your eggs can move through the tube.
