Laparoscopic Oophorectomy

Laparoscopic Oophorectomy

A laparoscopic oophorectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the ovary. The procedure may involve removal of one or both the ovaries, depending on the condition. Removal of only one ovary is known as unilateral oophorectomy, while removal of both the ovaries is known as bilateral oophorectomy. There are various conditions in which the doctor may recommend an oophorectomy surgery.

Why is it done?

An oophorectomy is useful if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Endometriosis
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Benign tumors
  • Cysts or tubo-ovarian abscess
  • Residual ovary syndrome
  • Dysgenetic gonads
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Ovarian torsion
  • High risk of ovarian and breast cancer
    • s, an oophorectomy is not only used to treat various conditions but may also be done to reduce the risk of ovarian or breast cancer in women.

      The Procedure:

A lap oophorectomy is a minimally invasive technique. A laparoscope (tube with light and camera) is used in this procedure, eliminating the need for large incisions like that of open surgery. Several small incisions are made in the abdomen to reach the ovary. The ovary is separated from the blood supply and surrounding tissue and placed in a pouch. The ovary is then cautiously removed and the incisions are closed.

      Risks And Side- Effects:

Though a lap oophorectomy is considered as a relatively safe procedure, there are some risks attached to it like:

      • Injury to urinary tract
      • Infection or bleeding
      • Rupture of tumor
      • Bad reaction to anesthesia
      • Nerve damage
      • Blood clots
      • Hernia
      • Bowel obstruction

Additionally, if you are not beyond menopause, you may experience hot flashes, anxiety, depression, vaginal dryness, osteoporosis, and insomnia as a result of the removal of ovaries.

      Recovery:

Patients undergoing lap oophorectomy take relatively lesser time to recover as compared to open surgery. There might be bandages over your incisions, which the doctor will ask to remove at an appropriate time. You will also be prescribed antibiotics to prevent infection and pain medication if required. You may be able to resume normal activities within two to three weeks.
