Abnormal Bleeding

Abnormal Bleeding between Menstrual Periods: What is it and why does it happen?

It is very important for women to pay attention to their reproductive health. Let’s start with thanking the combination of good bacteria residing in the vagina and delicately poised pH levels for maintaining the optimum health of our reproductive system. But these factors are not enough at times to maintain the healthiness of the vagina and the reproductive system.

Unhealthy hygiene practices, certain health conditions, hormonal imbalance, bacterial and yeast infections and even antibiotics can disrupt the ecosystem down there causing infection in the vagina which eventually spreads inside. The symptoms of unhealthiness can be anything like itching, swelling, redness, abnormal bleeding or metrorrhagia, etc.

What is Metrorrhagia?

The abnormal unsuspected bleeding that occurs between periods is termed as metrorrhagia. It can be caused by multiple factors like hormone imbalance, bacterial or yeast infections, and pregnancy complications. Other potential causes can be:

  • Medication
  • Abnormal growth in the uterus or cervix
  • Stressful life
  • Miscarriage (in case of pregnancy)
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Cancer

If you notice heavy regular bleeding in between periods, we suggest you contact your healthcare specialist at the earliest. You can choose Motherhood for this. Our team of experts are respected for the diverse knowledge, excellence in the field and their years of experience in women’s health care. They examine carefully and offer you a variety of treatments for metrorrhagia depending on the cause of the condition.

What are the symptoms of Metrorrhagia?

The symptoms of Metrorrhagia are as follows:

  • Bleeding between menstrual periods
  • Menstrual bleeding longer than eight days
  • Soaking the tampons or sanitary pads excessively (every hour)
  • Passing large clots during menstruation
  • Back pain
  • Abdominal pain during menstruation
  • Constantly feeling tired
  • Weakness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Anaemia (due to the loss of blood)

What are the leading causes of Metrorrhagia?

The causes can be anything; here are few of the main and common ones:

    1. 1. Hormonal Imbalance

Estrogens and progesterone are the two hormones that regulate a woman’s cycle. Any abnormality or imbalance in these hormones can cause abnormal bleeding. Especially estrogens, too much of estrogens in the body, causes the uterine lining to thicken; hence when the thick lining begins to shed, it can lead to increased blood loss and clots.

An imbalance in the estrogens level can occur due to a number of reasons like stress, lack of physical activities, hormonal contraceptive, and obesity.

    1. 2. Cancer

Cancer is the unstoppable and abnormal growth of cells in the organs. It is named according to where it originates from example; lung cancer arises from the lungs.

It is rare, but cancerous growth in any one of these organs can cause metrorrhagia, like:

      • Ovaries
      • Vagina
      • Cervix
      • Uterus
    1. 3. Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition where the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, usually in the fallopian tubes, ovaries, and pelvis. When the lining sheds, metrorrhagia is substantial.

    1. 4. Lack of ovulation

Ovulation is the process where the eggs are released from the ovary. If a woman has an ovulatory cycle which means that she doesn’t ovulate, then the uterine lining can grow continuously until it is forced to shed resulting in metrorrhagia.

    1. 5. Infection

Infection of the reproductive organs due to a sexually transmitted disease, pelvic inflammatory disease (inflammation of the reproductive organs), vaginal douching, or intercourse can also result in metrorrhagia.

    1. 6. Uterine growths

Uterine growths like fibroids and polyps are common noncancerous growths in the uterus which can also cause metrorrhagia.

  1. 7. Pregnancy Complications

Metrorrhagia or abnormal bleeding can be seen in case of a miscarriage and/or ectopic pregnancy (the embryo latches itself in the fallopian tube).
