What is Cystocele?

Cystocele, prolapsed bladder or dropped bladder is a condition where the bladder bulges or drops into the vagina. It happens when the ligaments that hold the bladder up and the muscle between the woman’s vagina and bladder weakens or stretches. Cystocele can be treated easily therefore, there is nothing to worry about.

Cystocele is mainly of 3 grades:

  • Grade 1: It is a mild condition where the urinary bladder does not drop too far into the vagina.
  • Grade 2: It is a moderate condition where the urinary bladder drops to the opening of the vagina.
  • Grade 3: It is a severe condition and should be given medical attention at the earliest. Here the urinary bladder bulges out from the opening of the vagina.

What causes Cystocele?

All organs inside the body are supported by muscles, ligaments and connective tissues which help the organs to stay in place. In case of cystocele or anterior prolapse, the connections between the pelvic floor muscles and ligaments weaken over time which results in bulging or dropping of the bladder into the vagina. The muscle weakness can be caused by anything like:

  • A trauma from childbirth
  • Chronic straining of pelvic floor muscles
  • Pregnancy (very rare)
  • Straining with bowel movements
  • Vaginal delivery
  • Persistent coughing or sneezing
  • Obesity
  • Heavy weightlifting

What are the symptoms of Cystocele?

Mostly prolapse doesn’t have any symptoms. A few signs and symptoms related to prolapse are:

  • Vaginal bulge
  • Frequent urination
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Chronic UTIs (urinary tract infections)
  • Painful intercourse
  • A constant feeling of heaviness or pressure in the vaginal area
  • Sudden pain in the vagina, pelvis, lower abdomen, groin or lower back

Can Cystocele be treated?

In the case of mild cystocele, the treatments are simple, they are:

  • Perform Kegel exercises
  • Avoid strenuous exercises like weightlifting
  • Consume high-fibre foods to prevent constipation
  • Shed that extra weight
  • Control coughing

Moderate cystocele is treated with oestrogen replacement therapy or by inserting a pessary (device) in the vagina to hold the bladder in place.

Severe conditions are treated with a reconstructive surgery known as the anterior repair which is for moving the bladder into the normal position. Be it a minor or major condition, you can trust Motherhood for the treatment.
