What is Laparoscopic Myomectomy?
Uterine fibroids are the most common benign tumors which occur in reproductive age group women. Uterine fibroids are detected in a small but significant number of infertile women. Laparoscopic myomectomy is a surgical procedure which is used to remove uterine fibroids which are also called as leiomyomas. At present, it is the most common surgical procedures in infertile patients. This procedure is done by making small incisions in the lower abdomen and then belly is filled with carbon dioxide to help the surgeon see inside the abdomen. The laparoscope is placed in one of the incisions, the laparoscope is a thin, lighted tube with a camera on the end.
Laparoscopic myomectomy has a low intensity of postoperative pain, required less analgesia, and had a shorter recovery time.
What are the types of Myomectomy?
Abdominal Myomectomy: In this procedure, the doctor makes a cut in the lower abdomen and remove the fibroids.
Laparoscopic Myomectomy: In this procedure, the doctor removes fibroids through small incisions.
Hysteroscopic Myomectomy: It requires a surgeon to use a special scope to remove fibroids through vagina and cervix.
What are the Risk Factors of Myomectomy?
Myomectomy has a low complication rate. This procedure has risk factors which are common to any minimally invasive technique. Risk factors include:
- Blood loss
- Scar tissue
- Childbirth complications
A laparoscopic approach is more advantageous and demanding. There is now a large number of pregnancies following laparoscopic myomectomy and the risk of uterine rupture in future pregnancies seems to be very low, with a good surgical technique.
It is a safe technique with an extremely low failure rate and good results in terms of pregnancy outcomes.
After laparoscopic myomectomy women stay in the hospital for one night. The doctor will provide medication to treat pain and discomfort. It generally requires two to three days.
