Vaginal prolapse is a condition where a part of the vagina stretches or sags, causing it to drop or protrude on other organs or parts of the body. This condition occurs due to the weakness of the muscles and tissues surrounding and supporting the pelvic floor and vagina. It is often accompanied by prolapse or expansion of support structures of the uterus. Prolapse can be of different types based on the organ/structure involved:
- Cystocele: prolapse of the bladder
- Urethrocele: prolapse of the urethra
- Rectocele: prolapse of the rectum
- Enterocele: prolapse of the small bowel
What the possible causes and symptoms of vaginal prolapse?
Vaginal childbirth and aging are factors that primarily cause prolapse as childbirth and long hours of labor stretch and weaken the muscles and tissues supporting the pelvic floor and vagina. Aging and menopause, in general, weaken the body muscles including the pelvic floor muscles and vaginal tissues. However, vaginal prolapse does not necessarily show symptoms. Women who have symptoms may feel a sense of discomfort of fullness in the vagina, lower back pain, pulling sensation in the pelvic area, urinary incontinence or pain while having intercourse.
Vaginal prolapse repair and recovery
Repairing vaginal vault involves a surgery where the vagina is reattached to either the lower abdominal wall, lower spine or pelvic ligaments through the vaginal or abdominal incision. This surgery helps in managing the symptoms like painful intercourse, vaginal bleeding, and pelvic discomforts.
After the surgery, you may be required to stay in the hospital for the next two days for observation. It takes about 4-6 weeks for one to resume their normal routine and it is strongly advised that one should not lift heavy objects or involve in any activities that may strain the body during the recovery period.
