Immunisation

Immunisation is the process by which an individual is made resistant or immune to a certain infection. Immunisation is achieved by administering a vaccine which then stimulates the body’s immune system to provide protection against infection or diseases in the future. Immunisation is one of the most effective ways of tackling various types of infections, many of which can even have fatal consequences.

How does immunisation work?

During immunisation, vaccines are administered to the body which is made of the same disease-causing microorganism. For example, a polio vaccine contains poliovirus which is either killed or weakened so that it will not make the person sick. The body then responds by developing antibodies which remain in the body and provide immunity. So , in case, the same microorganism invades the body in the future, the body is completely prepared to fight against it.

Why should you get your child immunised?

Immunisation helps to avert about two to three million deaths per year (according to WHO). Immunisation is a very effective way to prevent mild as well as serious infections. Immunisation is also extremely cost-effective, especially considering the cost of treatment of various infections. Moreover, prevention is always better than cure.

Immunisation not only prevents an individual from infections but also prevents the spreading of infection from one individual to another. With the help of immunisation, various infectious and life-threatening diseases which were responsible for the death of lakhs of individuals have been eradicated and many others are on the verge of eradication. This includes diseases like whooping cough, measles, mumps, polio, smallpox, etc. Hence, it is extremely important to get your child immunised to prevent and minimize the risk of various life-threatening infections.

Immunisation in India:

The schedule of immunisation varies depending on various factors like place, the health of the child, availability of the vaccine, type of vaccine, etc. The Universal Immunisation Programme launched by the Indian Government provides free vaccination against various life-threatening diseases like Tuberculosis, Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus, Polio, Hepatitis B, Pneumonia and Meningitis due to Haemophilus Influenzae type b (Hib), Measles, Rubella, Japanese Encephalitis (JE) and Rotavirus diarrhea.

Children require immunisation until the age of 12 and at Motherhood hospitals, we ensure that your child’s health is well taken care of. Motherhood’s immunisation schedule starts right from childhood and our immunisation schedule covers all the important and necessary vaccinations like whooping cough, HPV, chickenpox, etc.
