Good antenatal care is necessary if you are pregnant with twins or triplets. The kind of tests and scans depend on the twins or triplets you are having. Women with twins or triplets should undertakean ultrasound scan from 11 weeks to 13 weeks of their pregnancy to know what type of placenta and membranes twins have and to check the due date.
There are three types of twins or triplets:
Dichorionicdiamniotic (DCDA) twins: Each baby has separate placenta with its separate inner membrane and outer membrane.
Monochorionicdiamniotic (MCDA) twins: Both the babies share a single placenta with the single outer membrane and two inner membranes.
Monochorionicmonoamniotic (MCMA) twins: Both the babies share both the inner and the outer membranes.
If your babies are MCDA, then the doctor may suggest more scans as this type of twins have the highest risk of twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS).
Most multiple pregnancies are healthy and result in healthy babies, but you have to be aware when you are pregnant with multiple babies. If you are pregnant with one or more baby, then you are at higher risk of pregnancy complications such as:
Ultrasound is necessary for the detection of the position of multiples and the decision of the optimal route delivery.
