Every mother has a question in her mind and that is ‘how would she know that she is pregnant with twins?’ ‘What are the symptoms of twin pregnancy?’

Besides an ultrasound, few things indicate a twin pregnancy :

Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a protein which is produced by the liver and yolk sac of a developing baby during pregnancy. A very high level of AFP may mean that there are two babies excreting it.

A doctor checks for a heartbeat of a baby at around 10 to 12 weeks of pregnancy. If you are pregnant with twins, the doctor will hear two heartbeats.

HCG is a hormone that body secretes during pregnancy. A twin pregnancy causes to produce more HCG for longer periods than a singleton pregnancy.

Because of increased hormonal levels, morning sickness can be especially bad during a twin pregnancy. Here is what to do, if nausea hits you:

  • Eat a mix of protein, fat, and complex carbs at each meal as it will help regulate blood sugar and also nourishes you and your twins.
  • Drink milk thistle or dandelion root tea as they are good for the liver which is responsible for processing hormones and other toxins.
  • Have ginger and peppermint tea to boost your digestion. It is also helpful for stomach upset and nausea.
  • As soon as you wake up, eat something with protein and complex carbs.

A woman with twins feels utterly exhausted as the sharp rise in progesterone to support the gestation of two babies causes debilitating fatigue.

Pregnancy makes breasts sore and tender normally but in the case of twin pregnancy, soreness and tenderness are on an extreme level.

Carrying twins increases levels of hCG which results in very frequent urination.

Ultrasound confirms the pregnancy which is done after six weeks of pregnancy. There is a possibility of a hidden twin in an early but it is very rare. By the 20th week ultrasound, you would surely know whether you are having twins or not.

  • Take rest as much as you can as you will be tired carrying two babies.
  • Exercise daily as it will boost your energy levels during the day and help you sleep at night.
  • If you are a working woman, consider taking maternity leaves as early as you can. Mother with twins or more should stop working at 28 weeks.
  • Join a twin-specific antenatal class to prepare yourself. Try to finish the course before 34 weeks of pregnancy.
