As the due date approaches, your excitement to hold the little one in your hand hits rooftop. The tangible realization of this major milestone can be overwhelming. But at times many women don’t deliver on their due date. If you are one of them, don’t worry this is completely normal. But when this happens, you need to be extra cautious about your health and the health of your bundle of joy.
In order to rule out the possibility of any health risks, your healthcare specialist will recommend you to go for a BPP test.
A doctor recommends BPP Test or Biophysical Profile Test or an Ultra Sonography for pregnant women who have past their due date or have a higher risk of health problems during the pregnancy. These risks could be any health-related issues like diabetes or preeclampsia. BPP is also recommended if a pregnant woman has gone through any trauma, mentally or physically (a fall or an accident) to make sure that the baby is healthy which is done by keeping track of the baby’s health (fetus) throughout the pregnancy.
It is conducted between 32nd to 34th weeks of pregnancy or earlier
The BPP test is a combination of tests that keeps track of the baby’s health. During the test, the healthcare specialist can learn more about the baby’s movement, heartbeat rate, muscle quality, inhalation, and the amount of amniotic fluid protecting the baby in the womb.
The test is recommended strictly if:
A biophysical profile (BPP) is executed by an obstetrician or an ultrasound technician or a radiologist in hospitals, clinic, or other healthcare centres. It is safe and non-invasive and takes not more than an hour.
A biophysical profile test starts with an ultrasound. A sonographer asks the patient to lie on a couch and uncover the abdomen and applies gel on the abdomen. Then he/she passes a handheld probe over the skin of the abdomen to examine the baby’s body. The gel is applied to make sure that there is good contact between the probe and the skin. As the probe moves, a black and white 2-D image of the baby will appear on the ultrasound screen. The image is used to check the baby’s movement and the amount of amniotic fluid.
Another part of the BPP is a nonstress test which is performed if the doctor needs more information after the ultrasound. This is used to monitor the baby’s heartbeat for 20 minutes. Here, the healthcare specialist puts an elastic band (which consists of two sensors) around the belly of the mother-to-be to pick up the baby’s heartbeat. You can choose Motherhood for a BPP test.
