When you step into the third trimester of pregnancy, you are bound to feel everything at once, scared, excited, nervous, happy, etc. There will be millions of questions running in your mind and even more doubts. Hold on mama, because this is entirely normal. But if you want to know how much your baby has bloomed in all this time, there are scans that you can go for. One such scan is the growth scan.
Growth scan is a scan done between the 28th to 32nd weeks of pregnancy. It is a standard scanning procedure used to check the development of the baby in the third trimester.
A growth scan is an ultrasound scan done during the last trimester of pregnancy to determine the growth of the baby. It can be done once or many times (as per the requirement). The first fetal growth scan is suggested to be done between 28 weeks and 32 weeks of pregnancy to determine the growth and fetal wellbeing.
The second growth scan and colour Doppler studies are done closer to the due date, which is between 36 and 40 weeks.
A growth scan is very important to check the normal development of the foetus inside the womb.
To make it simpler, a growth scan is used to:
A sonographer asks the patient to lie on a couch and uncover the abdomen and applies gel on the abdomen. Then he/she passes a handheld probe over the skin of the abdomen to examine the baby’s body. The gel is applied to make sure that there is good contact between the probe and the skin. As the probe moves, a black and white 2-D image of the baby will appear on the ultrasound screen.
With the help of the image on the screen, the doctor will check how the baby is doing by checking the movement, breath, etc. and will rate the baby on a total score of 10 (modified Mannings score). A high number indicates that the baby is doing well whereas a lower score can suggest that the baby is not getting enough oxygen from the placenta.
The doctor also checks the baby’s head (HC) and abdomen (AC) circumference to check if the baby is growing healthily inside the womb or not. The scan can also identify gestational diabetes. If the amniotic fluid is more than it should be, it is a sign that the mother may have gestational diabetes.
To find out more about how the baby is doing, the sonographer can perform a Doppler scan to see how well the placenta is working. This is done by measuring the flow of blood between the placenta and the baby. You can trust Motherhood hospital for this.
