Caring for yourself in pregnancy

Pregnancy is physiologically and nutritionally a highly demanding period. Extra food is required to meet the requirements of the foetus. Pregnancy is the only period where you’re eating habits directly affect the growth of the baby. A nutritious, well-balanced eating plan will give your baby a strong start in life.

Recommended Dietary Allowances

  • 3 to 4 servings of fruits and vegetables.
  • 9 servings of whole grains for energy.
  • 3 to 5 servings of milk, yogurt and cheese for calcium.
  • 2 servings of pulses, nuts, dried beans and peas and 1 serving of meat and their products for protein.

Healthy Eating Tips:

  • Adequate intake of a nutritious diet is reflected in optimal weight gain during pregnancy (10kg).
  • Choose the foods rich in fibre which includes whole grain cereals, pulses and vegetables, to avoid constipation.
  • Take plenty of fluids including 8 to 12 glasses of water per day.
  • Excess intake of beverages containing caffeine like coffee and tea adversely affect the growth and hence, should be avoided.
  • Wrong food beliefs and taboos should be discouraged.
  • A pregnant woman should undergo periodic health check – up for weight gain, blood pressure and anaemia.
  • Requires enough physical exercise with adequate rest for 2 to 3 hours during the day.
  • Should not indiscriminately take any drugs without medical advice, as some of them could be harmful to the foetus.

Newborn Nutrition

During infancy, ensuring that your baby gets the right nutrition is essential for their growth and well -being. For the first six months, exclusive breastfeeding is ideal and highly recommended for their development and health. Breast milk is highly nutritious and promotes the development of both mind and body. It also contains vital substances like antibodies, antimicrobials and anti-inflammatory factors that protect the baby and help it fight off infections and diseases.

Breastfeeding is not just good for the baby but is beneficial for the mother as well. It stimulates the production of oxytocin and prolactin which not just promotes mother and child bonding but, aids in weight loss as well. It is important to remember that a what the mother eats through her pregnancy and while breastfeeding is what her baby eats. So, the mother must have a nutritious diet.
