Obstetric Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a painless and safe procedure which creates images of the unborn child. Ultrasound imaging, also known as sonography or ultrasound scanning, involves the use of ultrasound gel placed directly on your skin and a small transducer (probe). At Motherhood, the procedure does not include the use of ionizing radiation. Hence, it is safe for the monitoring and diagnosis of pregnant women.

At Motherhood Hospitals, ultrasound images are obtained in real-time. Hence, it shows the structure and movement of the physical organs of the body, as well as the blood flowing through the blood vessels.
Obstetric Ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of the child (fetus or embryo), as well as the ovaries and uterus of a mother.
The most common uses of the procedure are:
• To estimate the age of the pregnancy
• To evaluate the position of the placenta
• To check for shortening or opening of the cervix
• To establish the presence of a living fetus/embryo
• To determine the amount of amniotic fluid around the baby
• To diagnose congenital abnormalities of the fetus
• To assess fetal well-being
• To evaluate the position of the fetus
• To assess fetal growth
• To determine if there are multiple pregnancies
