Excessive drooling in babies is usually a normal part of growth and development, especially between 3 to 6 months of age when salivary glands mature and babies begin teething and mouthing objects. It occurs because infants have not yet fully developed swallowing control, and saliva helps with digestion and oral health. Drooling generally reduces as oral-motor skills improve over time. However, sudden excessive drooling or persistence beyond two years may require medical evaluation. Dr Amit Gupta, Senior Neonatologist and Paediatrician at Motherhood India, Noida, advises parents that drooling is typically normal but recommends consulting a doctor if unusual symptoms appear.
