Applying kajal to babies’ eyes is a common traditional practice, but medical experts warn it may pose serious health risks. Kajal can contain harmful substances like lead and other toxic metals, which may cause eye irritation, infections, inflammation, and even lead poisoning. Doctors also highlight that there is no scientific evidence supporting any benefits of kajal for improving eye health or vision in infants. Dr Amit Gupta, Senior Neonatologist and Paediatrician at Motherhood Hospital, Noida, Sec 48, advises parents to avoid applying kajal, as it can cause conjunctivitis, tear duct blockage, and potential long-term harm to a baby’s delicate eyes and overall health.
