In a major global shift in women’s healthcare, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) has officially been renamed Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) to better reflect the condition’s widespread hormonal and metabolic impact beyond fertility issues. Medical experts say the earlier term often led to delayed diagnosis and fragmented treatment because the disorder was largely viewed only as a reproductive problem. According to Dr. Nirmala M, Consultant Obstetrician, Gynaecologist and Fertility Specialist at Motherhood Hospitals, the inclusion of the term “metabolic” in PMOS acknowledges the serious underlying health concerns linked to the condition, including insulin resistance, obesity, diabetes risk, hormonal imbalance, and cardiovascular complications. Specialists believe the landmark name change will encourage earlier diagnosis, multidisciplinary care, and greater involvement of general physicians in managing the condition instead of limiting treatment primarily to fertility clinics.
