A viral Instagram reel claiming sanitary pads are unsafe has reignited debate over menstrual product safety. The video suggests that commercial pads contain chemicals like phthalates, VOCs and PFAS that could disrupt hormones and raise the risk of infections and urinary tract issues. Experts say that while pads with fragrances or chemicals can sometimes cause irritation, most risks stem from poor hygiene, like not changing pads often, rather than the products themselves. Dr Swati Rai, Consultant Gynecologist and Laparoscopic Surgeon at Motherhood Hospitals, Noida, notes she has seen more vaginal infections post menstruation linked to improper pad use and recommends menstrual cups as a safer alternative.
