A recent Mumbai Mirror health feature highlighted why women should not measure fitness only by a flat stomach or belly size. Dr. Pratima Thamke, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Motherhood Hospital, Kharghar, explained that hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause, and menopause can affect belly fat distribution, while stressing that true fitness should focus on strength, stamina, resilience, body balance, nutrition, and metabolic health rather than unrealistic flat-ab expectations.
