Doctors are warning women against the common habit of delaying bathroom breaks during busy workdays, travel, or long meetings, saying it may significantly increase the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) and long-term bladder problems. According to Dr. Pratima Thamke, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist at Motherhood Hospitals, holding urine for extended periods allows bacteria to multiply inside the bladder, raising the chances of infection, burning urination, pelvic discomfort, frequent urge to urinate, cloudy urine, and even kidney complications in severe cases. Experts explain that women are biologically more vulnerable to UTIs because of their shorter urethra, making preventive habits especially important. Doctors recommend staying hydrated, avoiding postponing urination, maintaining intimate hygiene, wearing breathable cotton underwear, and seeking medical attention if symptoms such as painful urination, fever, or blood in urine occur repeatedly.
