Rabies is a deadly viral infection that affects the nervous system and is almost always fatal once symptoms develop. The virus is typically transmitted through the bite of an infected animal, most commonly dogs. Experts stress that pre exposure vaccination can provide crucial protection for children at high risk of animal bites, such as those who play outdoors frequently or live in areas with large street dog populations. Immediate wound cleaning and prompt post exposure vaccination remain essential after any potential exposure. Dr Amar Bhise, Consultant PICU Paediatric Intensive Care Unit Neonatology and Paediatrics at Motherhood Hospitals, Lullanagar and Kharadi, Pune, explains that preventive vaccination along with education on bite management can significantly reduce the risk of rabies in children.
