False pregnancy, medically called pseudocyesis, is a rare condition in which a woman shows many signs of pregnancy such as missed periods, abdominal enlargement and sensations similar to fetal movement despite not being pregnant. The condition is believed to result from a complex interaction between psychological factors and hormonal changes, often linked to a strong desire or fear of pregnancy. Although there is no fetus, the body responds as if conception has occurred. The experience can be emotionally distressing and requires sensitive handling. Dr Nirmala M., Consultant Obstetrician, Gynaecologist and Fertility Specialist at Motherhood Hospitals, Whitefield, Bengaluru, explains that counselling and medical support play a key role in recovery.
