Pregnancy increases the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) due to hormonal changes and physical pressure on the bladder. Rising progesterone levels relax the urinary tract muscles, slowing urine flow and making it easier for bacteria to grow. As the uterus expands, it can also press on the bladder, preventing complete emptying. To reduce risk, pregnant women should stay well-hydrated, maintain good personal hygiene, urinate frequently, and never ignore symptoms like burning or frequent urination. According to Dr. Vaishnavi V. L., Consultant Gynaecologist, Obstetrician and Uro-Gynaecologist at Motherhood Hospitals, Chennai, early diagnosis and timely treatment of UTIs are essential to protect both maternal and fetal health.
