What is Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS)?
Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) is a prenatal screening which involves sampling the chorionic villi from the placenta for chromosomal abnormalities and some other genetic problems. The placenta is a structure in the uterus that provides blood and nutrients to the growing baby from the mother. It also removes the waste products from the blood of the baby. Chorionic Villi are a small part of placental tissues that resemble fingers and have a genetic make-up similar to that of the embryo.
At Motherhood Hospitals, Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) is performed between the 10 and 12 weeks of the pregnancy. CVS is an essential test as it can reveal whether a baby has a chromosomal condition or any other genetic conditions.
How should you prepare for the test?
The doctors at Motherhood Hospitals will familiarise you with the complete procedure, and then use ultrasound to determine the gestational age of the baby as well as the position of the placenta. You will be asked to lie down on your back with your abdomen exposed. Then, the sonographer will apply a warm gel on your abdomen and use a transducer to image the area of interest.
Once the ultrasound image is collected, Motherhood Hospitals’ best health care provider will use that ultrasound image as a reference to take the tissue sample of chorionic villi from the placenta. There are two ways by which the CVS procedure can be performed.
- Transcervical – The health care provider will clean your vagina and cervix with an antiseptic. Then, they will open your vagina with a speculum and insert a catheter through your cervix. When the catheter reaches the placenta, a slight suction will be used to obtain a small tissue sample.
- Transabdominal – In this procedure, the health care provider will clean your abdomen with an antiseptic and insert a needle through your abdominal wall and uterus into the placenta to collect tissue samples. The samples are assembled into a syringe, and the needle is removed.
