Haemorrhoids (Piles)

The constant throbbing bump in your bottom can put a damper on your everyday life. It will cause a string of agony in doing little things like sitting, standing, and even pooping. But do you know what causes this discomfort? Well, it’s nothing but haemorrhoids, also known as piles.

A recent study conducted (on the 16th of Jan 2018) showed that over 50% of people (male and female) suffered from haemorrhoids (before they are of 50 years of age) in India alone. This makes haemorrhoids or piles a common problem.

What are Haemorrhoids?

Haemorrhoids or piles are caused due to the excess pressure exerted during the bowel movement on the veins present in the rectal and pelvic area. The excess pressure can lead to swollen and stretched veins which can be painful and uncomfortable. Conditions like constipation and diarrhoea, pregnancy, obesity, etc. can also increase the pressure on this area and cause haemorrhoids.

Depending on where it is formed, haemorrhoids are of two types:

  • Internal haemorrhoid: Here the veins present inside the anus gets inflamed.
  • External haemorrhoid: Here the veins present outside or near the anal opening get swollen or inflamed.

What are the Symptoms of Haemorrhoids?

Usually, haemorrhoids don’t show any symptoms, but when symptoms do occur, they are:

  • Painful bowel movement
  • Itchy bottom
  • Swelling of the anus
  • A lump protruding out of the anus (can be pushed back)
  • Passing of blood along with the stool
  • Soreness and redness around the anus

What Causes Haemorrhoids?

Haemorrhoids or piles are caused by the pressure exerted on the veins or blood vessels present in and around the anus. This pressure is caused due to:

  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Anal intercourse
  • Diet low in fibre
  • Straining during the bowel movements
  • Sitting for a long time on the toilet
  • Chronic diarrhoea
  • Chronic constipation

Can Haemorrhoids be cured?

Definitely! Haemorrhoids are treated depending on the situation and severity of the condition. Following are the treatment options for haemorrhoids:
1. Home Remedies
The best way to prevent haemorrhoids is by keeping the stool soft, which can be done by:

  • Consuming food rich in fibre
  • Keeping yourself hydrated
  • Exercising regularly
  • Not exerting pressure while defecating
  • Not sitting for a long time while defecating

2. Medication
Medication for haemorrhoids is advised by a medical professional to make the symptoms more manageable. A few of them are:

  • Over-the-counter (OTC) medications like painkillers, ointments, creams, and pads that help in reducing the redness and swelling around the anus.
  • Corticosteroids: To help reduce the pain and swelling.
  • Laxatives: To help reduce the pressure due to constipation.

  • Banding
  • Sclerotherapy
  • Infrared coagulation
  • Haemorrhoidectomy
  • Haemorrhoid stapling
