Appendicitis

Appendicitis can strike anyone (between the ages of 10 and 30 years), anytime and anywhere without much warning and leave you in excruciating pain. It is a condition characterized by the swelling of the appendix which is often spotted too late because the symptoms are not so vivid at the initial stages.

At times, due to delayed treatment, this vestigial organ bursts, spreading the infection to the abdomen and other regions of the body which can be life-threatening. In such a case, surgical removal of the appendix is often the first line of treatment.

What Is Appendicitis?

An appendix is a three and a half inch long tube of tissue that extends from the large intestine. The role of the appendix is not quite certain, but studies suggest that it has some role in gut immunity. The inflammation of this vestigial organ is termed as appendicitis.

What are the Symptoms of Appendicitis?

Symptoms of appendicitis are:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Sudden loss of appetite
  • Sudden sharp pain on the right side of the lower abdomen
  • Sudden pain that begins around your navel.
  • Pain on the right side of the lower abdomen when you cough, walk, or make other sudden movements
  • Slight fever that doesn’t go away
  • Constipation or diarrhoea
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Weight loss

What Causes Appendicitis?

When stool, a foreign body, a cancer, or an infection blocks the appendix, it leads to appendicitis. This blockage will result in the swelling of this organ which may burst if on-time treatment is not provided.

Is there a Treatment for Appendicitis?

As said before, appendicitis is a common problem, and if the infection is mild, then antibiotics are strong enough to treat the condition. Another successful way of treating appendicitis is appendectomy. Appendectomy is a surgical procedure for removing an infected or swollen appendix. It takes about 12 hours to complete and about 2-3 weeks to recover from. Appendectomy can be performed laparoscopically or via an open surgery.

Doctors these days prefer laparoscopic surgery over any other surgery since it is a minimally invasive surgery (MIS). Minimal invasion ensures minimal scarring, minimum hospital time, minimal blood loss, and faster recovery.

Laparoscopic surgery or keyhole surgery is a minimally invasive surgery. It is a specialized technique of performing surgery which is assisted by a laparoscope. A laparoscope is a thin, long tube which has a high-intensity light and a high-resolution camera that sends images to a video monitor. In the procedure, a laparoscope is inserted through a small incision in the abdominal wall, and the surgery is performed. It is a low-risk, minimally invasive procedure that requires only tiny incisions.

The Minimally Invasive Surgery Division at Motherhood caters to all conditions, offering the best minimally invasive options for all employing the latest technology. With the state-of-the-art technology and training, surgeries performed here are successful using small incisions which require only a few stitches, thereby reducing the trauma caused to the body.
