Vaginitis

Learn more about Vaginitis!

The feeling of itchiness, swelling, soreness or redness down there can be quite uncomfortable. The vaginal region is a very fragile and sensitive area hence scratching it recklessly when you feel the discomfort will do nothing but harm.

When you feel that something is not right consult with your healthcare specialist because the reason can be an underlying problem like Vaginitis.

What is Vaginitis?

Vaginitis is the swelling and soreness of the vaginal region which is often caused by bacteria or yeast infection, STDs, detergents, douches or vaginal sprays. If you think you have an infection, don’t worry as there are easy, simple cares that can quickly help you get rid of it.

If the condition persists for a prolonged time, consult with a healthcare specialist to get the right preventive care and treatment. There are small things that evan you can do yourself to avoid it like keep the vaginal area clean, change the undergarments daily, avoid using vaginal hygiene creams or soap, wash and rinse properly after using the toilet or after sexual intercourse.

What are the types of Vaginitis?

Abnormal vaginal discharge is the main symptom of vaginitis and the characteristics of the discharge can indicate the type of vaginitis. They are:

  • Bacterial vaginosis: It is characterised by grayish-white, foul or fishy smelling discharge.
  • Yeast infection: It is characterised by a white, thick discharge which is often accompanied by constant itching.
  • Trichomoniasis: It is characterised by greenish-yellow frothy discharge.

How do I know if I have Vaginitis?

You can suspect a case of vaginitis if you have been experiencing the following symptoms:

  • Abnormality in the colour, smell or quantity of vaginal discharge
  • Constant vaginal itching
  • Painful sexual intercourse
  • Pain while passing urine
  • Slight bleeding or spotting

What causes Vaginitis?

Depending on how you contract the disease, the causes of vaginitis can be broadly classified into two, they are:

1. Sexual contact

Examples are:

  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) or genital warts
  • Herpes simplex virus
  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Trichomoniasis

2. Non-Infectious Vaginitis

Sometimes an allergic reaction or irritation from certain products can also cause vaginitis. Few of the most common products are:

  • Detergents
  • Fabric softeners
  • Lace underwear
  • Unhygienic lifestyle
  • Douches
  • Vaginal perfume and sprays
  • Spermicides
