The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland situated in the neck. The thyroid gland secretes thyroid hormones which are extremely important as they influence almost all the metabolic activities in the body. Hence, abnormal production of thyroid hormones causes various health issues and ailments.

Function of the thyroid:

The thyroid is responsible for optimal growth and development of the body. Other bodily functions like temperature, heartbeat etc. are also controlled by the thyroid.

The thyroid gland takes the iodine found in food items and converts it into thyroid hormones: T3 and T4. These hormones are then poured into the bloodstream and are absorbed by almost every cell for regulation of metabolism.

Thyroid problems:

Thyroid problems can range from harmless issues like goiter to serious conditions like thyroid cancer. However, most common of the thyroid problems are hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism which are caused due to over secretion and under secretion of thyroid hormones respectively.

Symptoms of thyroid problems:

The symptoms of thyroid problem vary depending on the exact thyroid problem.

Symptoms of hypothyroidism:

  • Fatigue
  • Cold sensitivity
  • Constipation
  • Dry skin
  • Unexplained weight gain
  • Hair loss
  • Delayed puberty or growth

Symptoms of hyperthyroidism:

  • Change in appetite
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Excess sweating
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Hyperactivity and mood swings
  • Puffy eyes
  • Irritability

Role of thyroid hormones in pregnancy:

The thyroid hormones are extremely important for the development of baby’s brain and nervous system. In healthy pregnant women, the levels of thyroid hormones are slightly higher as the baby does not produce any thyroid during the first trimester. Even until 20 weeks, the baby does not produce sufficient thyroid gland and gets the supply of thyroid harmones through the mother. The thyroid is extremely important for the development of the baby even during this phase.

Hyperthyroidism and pregnancy:

Excess production of thyroid hormones (hyperthyroidism) during pregnancy poses several health risks for the mother as well as the baby like:

  • Miscarriage
  • Premature birth
  • Low birth weight
  • Increased risk of congestive heart failure
  • Preeclampsia

The effects can continue in the baby even after birth in the form of irritability, faster heart rate, poor weight gain etc.

If the condition is mild, it may not require any treatmentbut if the hyperthyroidism is severe during pregnancy, the doctor may prescribe anti-thyroid medication to keep the thyroid levels in control.

Hypothyroidism and pregnancy:

Just like hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism may also pose significant health risks in pregnant women like:

  • Stillbirth
  • Low birth weight
  • Preeclampsia
  • Anaemia
  • Congestive heart failure

To treat hypothyroidism, your doctor may prescribe medication to make up for the lack of thyroid hormones. The doctor may also ask you to increase the consumption of iodine in your diet if needed.
